What activities should an assisted living home offer? A week at Prairie Pines in Eads

What should assisted living activities look like? A nurse-owner walks through a real week at Prairie Pines in Eads, Colorado, and what to ask on a tour.

In short

A good assisted living home gives residents a steady week they can count on, celebrations to look forward to and neighbors coming through the door. At Prairie Pines in Eads, that means bingo three afternoons a week, Tuesday coffee hour with people from town, church on Sunday afternoons and an indoor pool residents can use any time.

The best way to judge the activities at an assisted living home is to look at an ordinary week, not a brochure. A good home gives residents a steady rhythm, something to look forward to and people coming through the door.

I'm Parul Darji, a registered nurse with more than 20 years in healthcare. Since 2026 I've owned Prairie Pines, a 20-room home in Eads, Colorado, and I also own the Aspen Leaf homes in Limon, Flagler and Stratton. My belief is simple: residents should be known by name, not by room number. Much of that happens over a game of bingo or a cup of coffee, so here's what a week looks like at Prairie Pines, and what I'd ask about activities at any home you visit.

What activities should an assisted living home offer?

A steady daily rhythm, something to look forward to each week, celebrations through the year and comfortable places to spend time between them.

When I read a home's calendar, I look for a mix. There should be time with other people, time to move, something creative and room for faith if it matters to the resident. There should also be quiet hours. A week that's all television is thin, and a week packed too full for anyone to keep up isn't real either.

What does a week of activities look like at Prairie Pines?

Our administrator, Sheri Mendez, and her team keep the same easy rhythm every day:

  • 7:30 AM: breakfast
  • Around 10 AM: exercise or a group activity
  • Noon: lunch
  • Afternoon: the main activity of the day
  • 5 PM: supper

The afternoons change through the week. Bingo is Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesday, people from town come in for coffee hour with residents. Church comes to Prairie Pines on Sunday afternoons, and every Broncos game is on TV. Community members also lead sip-and-paint and soap-making sessions.

Evenings belong to the residents. Some turn in early, and some stay up late.

How does the town of Eads become part of the week?

Much of the week comes in through the front door. Our indoor pool is also the town's public pool, so residents share it with their neighbors. Residents can swim any time, day or night, and water aerobics runs twice a week. Visiting family can swim with them, too.

Add Tuesday coffee hour, Sunday church and the community-led sessions, and residents see familiar faces from town every week. About a third of our residents come from a metro area or from outside the local area, and this is an easy way for them to get to know Eads.

Why do holiday and seasonal events matter?

They give residents something to look forward to and bring families into the home. At Prairie Pines, celebrations have included a St. Patrick's Day bingo, a summer luau and Christmas lunch beside the tree. The photos in this post come from those days.

When you tour any home, ask what happened at the last holiday. A home that celebrates can tell you about it in detail.

What else is there to do between activities?

Plenty, because the home itself is built for everyday living. Prairie Pines has a library, a garden with walking paths, recreation rooms, a family area and a hair salon. The workout room has resistance bands, step platforms, an elliptical and an exercise bike. Residents can also cook in the kitchen with a staff member there. You can see these spaces on our amenities page.

What should you ask about activities on a tour?

These are the questions I'd ask anywhere, because they show what really happens, not just what's planned:

  • Can I see this month's calendar? Then ask what happened last week.
  • Who leads the activities? Ask whether people from the community come in.
  • What happens on an ordinary weekday afternoon? Ask if you can visit during one.
  • What's there for a resident who'd rather have a quiet afternoon?
  • Can family join in? At Prairie Pines, family can visit from 7 AM to 7 PM, swim with residents in the pool and bring pets to visit during the day.

Our Family Guide has a longer checklist to take on any tour.
